‘Cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought: “Make amends”
Pet Shop Boys ~Being Boring~
In life, you do things you don’t want to; things you may find useless, unpleasant, or just boring. You may also waste a lot of time when you’re say, taking the bus to school or work, or when you’re cooking or just don’t have what to do at work; and you probably sometimes feel like you just don’t have enough time to finish your work and really need to relax and unwind. The thing is that you have two problems which could solve each other! Sounds really weird, but filling these ‘gaps’ in your day to day time is really important, but mostly underestimated. Here’s what you can do.
1. Take an mp3 player (ipod) or a good book with you.

Or both! Put them in a small backpack or even in your pocket, it won’t really bother you. This way, whenever you’re don’t have anything really important to do, like cooking or just typing you can start listening to music. Whenever you’re in the bus, you can start reading, or during the lunch break after you’ve eaten. These activities are quite relaxing and although you may not notice it, your day will be a lot better and you’ll even be able to do some more work later after. You should try it, it’s quite fun.

Say you can’t start working on a certain project at work, cause you don’t have some data. What are you gonna do? Just sit around, and wait? Tempting, but no. Why not do something else, something you’re still going to have to do later. This way you save the time you would otherwise need to finish the 2nd task. You can also use point 1. here, but the big thing is to motivate yourself at first, to get past the first impulse, which is to check your email, or call a friend or go out. Which leads us to the next tip…
3. Think and motivate yourself!

These things are really underestimated. The thing is, you can sit around and read blog posts all day long but if you don’t motivate yourself to start doing the right things… it’s just more wasted time. Also, when you’re doing something that doesn’t require your full attention, use your mind to its maximum potential. Think about how you can solve your problems, about how things are and how you’d want them to be and what you could do to change things and make them better. If you’re having trouble finding ways to motivate yourself, listen to some uplifting music, or think about whatever or whoever is the driving force that gives you inner power, whether it’s your family, girlfriend, friends, or just your own ideas.
These ideas are really simple. They may seem no brainers, or goofy, or just plain useless, but just try them. You’ll find that the benefits of such simple actions are just huge. Just keep in mind that the person that can help you the most is you.
